Facebook, Films & Funtastic Experiments: Jagga Jasoos

My mom taught me that if you can't say something nice about someone or something then don't say anything. As far as Facebook and Films are concerned, clearly most people feel otherwise. Everyone's a friggin' critic. And while I get that we are among the few (foolish) professions that put themselves out there willingly to be judged by the world (including by people completely incompetent to do the same), I'm still amazed by the passion or venom with which people express their feelings towards a film especially if they've disliked it. Almost like the makers killed their puppies or ate their babies. A lot of it often as an attempt to be 'witty'. Calm a ding ding, bro.

On a film, I'd rather you go watch it and form your own opinion rather than feed you mine unsolicited. If you didn't like it, it's ok, someone else might. You can agree to disagree. Wait for the next one. It takes a tremendous amount of blood, sweat, tears and effort to even make a film that may not work for you.

Now when a film is getting a disproportionate amount of hate or dissing because a lot of people didn't 'get it', because it's 'experimental', or <insert your reason here>... believe me, I know... I thought it was important to share a perspective.

Jagga Jasoos is brilliant. In its sheer attempt to create a new storytelling format and grammar. Besides Ranbir, the cinematography, the music and it's ballsiness. It requires madness, passion and courage to do this and back this. And it deserves more than a chance at the box office, from the so called critics (that's all of us) & more. That's what will give other madmen the confidence and critically also the chance to attempt things that others don't. And that is what will move the dial in a business otherwise focused on playing safe with only sequels, prequels, extensions, superheroes, stars, adaptations and spin offs. That applies to both Hollywood & Bollywood.

Go give this one a shot. It's all heart!
And all the people associated with the film, take a bow!
